Fall 2024
Call for Submissions

And the one who seeks—finds.

Matthew 7:8

Theme for Fall 2024: In the fall issue, our theme is “Found.” What does it mean to find? Or to lose and find again? What does it mean to be found? Stories, asides, experiments, profiles, photographs, and art pieces that participate in the theme will be especially considered: perhaps a photo of a white pebble amidst a black sand beach, or a poem about finding spiritual truth in a fallen acorn. We look forward to seeing how you interpret this sense of found-ness, belonging, discovery.

Words - How to Submit

The Hilltop Quarterly welcomes queries and/or completed manuscripts that showcase Corban’s people, places, and culture. Initial contact should be in the form of a query that includes the following:

  • A brief description of the story: the angle, subjects, and location.

  • Where the story would fit in The Hilltop Quarterly (e.g. Theme, Clocktower, The Tunnels, Poetry, Flash Fiction, etc.).

  • Reference to any photo resources for the story, especially regarding Features queries.

  • References to previously published work.

  • All contact information.

As Cormac McCarthy says, “writing is rewriting.” Make sure your work is washed, combed, and wearing its most lavish Sunday suit upon submission. Furthermore, expect an editorial processing of your work. Nothing we ever write is ever truly finished until someone else takes a look!

Format

Finally, please format all submissions as follows:

  • 12-point font

  • Times New Roman, Garamond, or similar Serif font

  • 1.5 or double spaced

  • Single space after periods

  • Include Author Name, Title, Submission Date, and Department/Feature in Header

  • One submission per document, submitted as .docx file or similar. Include Author Name and Title in document name.

Feature Stories

Found - Fall 2024 Hilltop Quarterly theme

(1200 to 4000+ words): Short, focused pieces that focus on creatively connecting to this edition's featured theme "Found."

2

The Clocktower

(300 to 1000 words): Short, focused pieces that focus on a particular moment in time, emphasizing events, places, and people.

3

Tunnels

(300 to 1000 words): An old film reel; your grandma’s duck coffee mug; a weathered goat-skin Bible; that one chair that everyone loves to sit in with 100 stories to tell —Artifacts tell the story of a thing and highlight some deeper connection to it.

Poetry & Flash Fiction

Poetry

(less than 300 words): Poetry of all kinds that emphasizes the Hilltop Quarterly "Call for Submissions" current theme.

2

Flash Fiction

(less than 500 words): Short story that emphasizes the Hilltop Quarterly "Call for Submissions" current theme.

Travel & Culture

Beyond the Hill

(300-1000 words): What's close to Corban that students should know about? What do Corban students do on the weekend? During Spring break? Do they road trip down highway 101, or go camping in the surrounding forests of Mt. Hood? Share your traveling abroad adventures or missions stories. Recall your ethnic familial traditions. This segment tells of an experience that helps us see beyond Corban culture. Help us highlight and celebrate culture in some way, missions work, or ministry. What's going on "beyond the hill"? Photo essays encouraged.

2

Restaurant and Coffee Shop Reviews

(300 to 1000 words): Take readers behind-the-scenes on where to go and where to avoid at local spots to eat and drink.  Priority is authenticity and entertainment. What are the best dishes? Who offers the best value? Anything we should avoid? Include photos if possible.
